Stop Paying Rent on an Empty Room: Student Storage Near Your Uni

Stop Paying Rent Empty Room Student Storage - blog_3 v2

Semester 1 is wrapping up, and winter is here. Exams are done (or almost done), and suddenly you’ve got a bigger problem: what on earth do you do with a room full of furniture, textbooks, a rice cooker, and three suitcases you’ve been meaning to unpack since O-Week?

Heading home for the break? Going overseas? Moving out? Finishing your degree? Whatever your situation, the question is the same: where does all your stuff go? Hauling everything home isn’t always an option. Dumping it at a mate’s place gets awkward fast. And paying rent on an empty room through winter is basically lighting money on fire.

We help students across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane sort this out every single semester. This guide has everything you need whose storage helps, what to put in, what size to get, which StorHub is closest to your uni, and how to book without the hassle. Or if you just want to get straight to it, head to our personal storage page

1. Sound familiar? Here’s who we help every semester

More students use storage at semester end than you’d expect. Here are the four situations we see that come through our doors every single June.

You’re going home for winter

If home is another city or state, you’re not squeezing your desk, your entire wardrobe, and you're bedding onto the train. A small storage unit means you take what you need, leave the rest safe with us, and come back to it when Semester 2 kicks off.

You’re an international student flying home

This is the one that catches people off guard most. If you’re flying home for 4–8 weeks, you can’t exactly take your furniture with you. And leaving everything in an empty room or with someone you barely know? Not ideal. According to Study Australia, Australia hosts students from almost every country in the world and most of them face exactly this at semester end. The answer is simple: pack your unit, lock it up, fly home. Everything’s right here when you land back in Australia.

Your lease is ending and the new place isn’t ready yet

Lease ending mid-break, new place not available until Semester 2? Classic. This gap is one of the most stressful things about student life and it happens to so many people. Storage is the pressure valve move your stuff out when you need to, then move into the new place when it’s actually ready. No rushing, no drama. If you’re not sure about your rights when moving out, NSW Fair Trading and Consumer Affairs Victoria have the info you need.

You’re done. Graduating. Moving on.

Finishing your degree in June is a huge deal, and it also means moving out for good, often in the middle of winter, with no clear plan yet for what comes next. Storage gives you the breathing room to figure it out properly instead of making rushed decisions in the last crazy week of semester. You’ve earned a bit of a breathing room.

2. The maths that’ll make your jaw drop

Students who use storage instead of keeping a room or apartment over the break save an average of $1,500 in rent they don’t need to pay. That’s real money money that could go towards your flights home, your next semester’s groceries, or honestly just your social life.

Now compare that to a StorHub unit for 6–8 weeks over winter. A locker starts at around $115 a month. A small unit that holds your whole room? From around $80 a month. The entire winter break could cost you $80–$160 total versus $1,000+ in rent on a room you’re not even in. Yeah. The maths is pretty obvious.

And because our units are month-to-month with no lock-in contracts, you only pay for the weeks you need. If Semester 2 starts earlier than expected no problem. Check our current promotions we often have student deals running through the winter break period.

3. Good news: winter is perfect timing for storage

Semester 1 ending in June is honestly ideal timing for student storage. Here’s why that’s a good thing.

Winter is the quietest time of year for storage demand. That means you’re more likely to get the size you want, in the location you want, at a better rate than in the summer rush. Booking for the winter break puts you ahead of the curve.

There’s also a practical reason to use proper storage in winter specifically: cold and moisture are genuinely bad for your stuff. Condensation can damage laptops, monitors, and gaming gear. Damp can ruin clothes, books, and furniture. All our units are climate-controlled, so your things stay in the same condition you left them not sitting in a cold, damp space for six weeks.

And if you’re also moving out of your place at the same time, our winter moving guide has practical tips on packing in wet and cold weather. Well worth a read before moving day.

4. What actually goes into the unit? Here’s your checklist

Not sure what to store and what to shove in your bag? Here’s the breakdown. And if you need boxes, tape, furniture wraps or plastic tubs, grab them from the StorHub box shop on-site at each facility.

A few things to keep in mind when packing for winter specifically:

  1. Your tech needs climate control. Condensation is genuinely bad for laptops, monitors and consoles. All our units are climate-controlled, so you’re covered.
  2. Wash before you store. Clothes or bedding with food residue or moisture can attract pests over a few weeks. Give things a quick wash before they go in.
  3. Pack boxes properly. Half-full boxes collapse when you stack them. Fill the gaps with scrunched paper, old hoodies, whatever you have.
  4. Label everything on all four sides. Seriously. You will absolutely thank yourself when you’re unpacking in July.

5. What size unit do you actually need?

The most common question we have. The answer depends on how much you’re storing, but here’s a simple guide to get you started. Still not sure?

Most students go for the small unit (3–5 m²) it fits a full bedroom’s worth of stuff comfortably and is the right call for most semester break situations. If you’re splitting with housemates, a medium unit shared between two or three people usually works out cheaper per person than everyone booking separate lockers

6. Find the StorHub closest to your uni

Semester end is already chaotic enough. You don’t want to be driving across the city with a car full of boxes. Here’s exactly where to find us relative to the major universities in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra.

You can see all our locations and book online. Same-day and next-day move-in is available at most locations.

7. Share the unit with your housemates and split the cost

Okay, this is genuinely one of the best student storage hacks, and not enough people do it. If two or three of you are all moving around the same time, just book one medium unit together instead of separate lockers. Everyone pays less, you use less total space, and you only need to sort one move between you.

Here’s the simple version of how to make it work:

  1. Decide who’s storing what before moving day. A quick group chat list is fine. Just do it before you’re standing in the car park, arguing.
  2. Label every box with your name AND what’s inside. When you’re unpacking in July, you do not want to be opening eight boxes looking for your laptop charger.
  3. Sort out access. All of you can be listed as authorised users, so anyone can get in when they need to.
  4. Split the cost upfront. One person books, everyone pays their share immediately. Future you will thank present you for sorting this out early.
  5. Set an end date before you book. Month-to-month means you’re flexible, but agreeing on a rough move-out date means no one gets surprised by another month’s charge.

For three people sharing a medium unit over winter break, each person might pay $40–$50 for the whole break. That’s genuinely cheaper than a night out.

8. How to book (it’s easier than you think)

Booking with us is quick. Here’s what to expect depending on where you’re at with timing:

Frequently Asked Questions

What size storage unit does a student need?

For most students storing over a semester break, a small unit (3–5 m²) is enough for a full bedroom’s worth of belongings. If you’re just storing a few boxes and a suitcase, a locker is sufficient. Use our Visual Size Estimator for a personalised recommendation or call us and describe what you’ve got.

Can I just store all my stuff with StorHub during the break?

100% that’s what we’re here for. Our personal storage units are right near the major universities in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra. All climate-controlled, all with 24/7 PIN access, all month-to-month. Easy.

Is it safe to put my laptop and other valuables in storage over winter?

Yes, as long as you’re using a climate-controlled unit, which all our units are. Climate control stops condensation and moisture from damaging your electronics, furniture and clothes through the cooler months. For extra cover on your laptop, bike, camera or instruments, add StoreProtect when you book. Simple.

Can me and my housemates share a unit?

Yes, and honestly you should. Sharing a medium unit between two or three of you is almost always cheaper per person than separate lockers. Everyone gets listed as an authorised user, so you can all access it. Just label your boxes and agree on a rough end date before you book. Done.

I’m an international student flying home. Can I leave everything with you?

Yes, this is one of the most common reasons students use us. Pack everything into the unit before you fly, lock up, and it’s all here when you land back in Australia. Month-to-month terms mean you’re covered whether your break is 4 weeks or 3 months. The Study Australia website has helpful information on accommodation and living costs if you’re planning your next semester in Australia.

I’ve left it late. Can I still book?

Yep. Ideally, you’d book 2–4 weeks before semester ends to get the best choice of sizes, especially for units near popular uni locations. But if you’ve left it to the last minute, don’t stress. Our online booking is open 24/7, and same-day move-in is available at most locations. Get in touch and we’ll sort it out.

Are my things covered while they’re in storage?

All our facilities have 24/7 CCTV, individual unit alarms, and PIN-controlled access. For valuables, tech or anything you’d really rather not replace, StoreProtect is a straightforward add-on when you book no separate insurance policy, no paperwork.

You’ve got enough on your plate right now

Semester end is one of the most full-on weeks of the year. Exams, deadlines, moving out, saying goodbye to people is a lot. The storage side of things genuinely doesn’t need to add to that. Book a unit near your uni, pack at your own pace, lock up, and go enjoy your break knowing everything is safe and dry throughout the winter.

Whether you’re going home for a few weeks, flying overseas, moving out for good, or just need somewhere for your stuff while you figure out what’s next, we’ve got you covered. Right size, right location, prices that work for a student budget.

Find your nearest location and book online. Same-day move-in is available at most facilities. For more guides like this one, head to toe StorHub blog
